Variant order resets after restart

If I rearange the order of variants in the variants tab in the PIM the effects takes place on the site, but after a restart of the application (which happens on deploys among other event), the order is reset to some default value. It looks like its based on articlenumber.

What is causing this? Is there any indexing happening at startup?

Litium version: 8.12.0

This happens in other solutions as well. I replicated this issue in a project that we updated to 8.14.5, and the same happens here.
