Adding files (not images) to variant

Is it possible to add files that are not images to a variant? and if so how does one do this?
The user interface only allows adding images, not files (I mean .pdf files for example)

You can add files to a variant by adding a new field to the field template. You can use either MediaPointerFile or a generic Pointer field with its Entity set to Files. The latter allows for adding multiple files to the same field (if Multi select is set to yes).
