Excel import removing product category links

When performing an excel import, I have noticed that an entire category loses all of its products.
The excel sheet in question only contains data for a few text fields and the products that are being removed from the category do not have any changes those text fields.

It would be great if we could get a better understanding of how the excel import works. For example, will it always save a variant even if no data has been changed?

And what sort of checks against category links does the import do? Really can’t see how/why it is removing products from a category.

Not sure how your Excel file looks like, ex if that contains the category column. In most cases I have seen that the connection from the base product to the category is dropped is because the link does not have any active variants.

An entity that not is changes will not trigger any database changes, but if you have a base product with a link to a category but no active variants on that link the link will be removed and cause and database update.
